The Zonta Club of the Coos Bay Area

The Zonta Club of the Coos Bay Area was chartered in 1953 and has grown to include over 80 women throughout Coos County. Our club has raised and distributed over $240,000 in just the last 10 years. Our fundraising events include: Chocolate Sales at local festivals & our Annual Celebrity Dinner & Silent Auction. We enjoy each other's company, while contributing in a positive way to our community and advancing the status of women worldwide.

Winners of Grant Awards for 2011

At the Program meeting of the Zonta Club of the Coos Bay Area, the Service of Money Committee awarded $16,201.00 to 12 non-profit organizations throughout Coos County. These organizations were choosen as their programs best met the mission of the Zonta Club; “To improve the status of women through education, health, and leadership programs, inspiring women to advance.” The funds awarded were the result of the Annual Celebrity Dinner fundrasier.

Bay Area First Step, $500
            Represented by Kenny Annaloro. The funds will be used for a “Bee Well” wellness program
Some facts presented: 

  • 31% of Coos Co. is obese compared to the state and national avg. of 25%
  • 28% of Coos Co. smokes, state avg. is 18%, national avg. is 15%
  • 18% of Coos Co. drinks to excess. The National avg. is 8%

Coos County 4-H Leaders Assoc. $1000
            Represented by Elissa Wells. The funds will be used for leadership training costs. They will purchase three new curricula for training adult and teen volunteers, including funds to bring in guest speakers.

Coos County Women’s Health Coalition $2000
            Represented by Sonja Flowers. The funds would be used for the 4th Annual Mother’s Day Walk & Talk event. The CCWHC is an active organization with a mission of “promoting a healthy active lifestyle for the women of Coos County.” Zonta is a founding member and key sponsor of CCWHC.

Southern Coos Health Foundation $800
            Represented by Melody Gillard-Juarez. This is a special project to provide free digital mammograms. Currently there is a fundraising program to purchase the equipment and begin providing the service to those who don’t have insurance.

Coos County Friends of Public Health $2000
            Represented by Angie Webster. They will provide vouchers for women’s health services through the Coos Co. Public Health. 75% of the women receiving services are below the poverty level.

Coos County Pregnancy Resource Center $1396.98
            Represented by: Madge Osborn.  The funds will again be used for prenatal vitamins. “It is the desire of the CCPRC to equip women in our community to have healthy pregnancies.” This begins by providing for a healthy environment in vitro for the unborn child. The March of Dimes states, “Pregnant women should get 600 micrograms of folic acid every day from food and supplements.”

Restoration Worship Center Food Pantry $1200
            Represented by Mary Wilson. Seeking ways to provide basic care items not provided through food pantries or food stamps including toothpaste, soap, shampoo, OCT medications, baby care items, personal hygiene items, stamps, and other items essential for job hunting. The cost per person is approx. $15.25/mo.

Oregon Coast Arts dba: ORCO Arts $1000
            Represented by: (student)Youth Leading Youth – Leadership by Example inspires young women ages 16 – 19 to develop advanced leadership skills. This program received seed funding from the For Family Foundation. The funds will help those who have stepped forward to facilitate training and mentoring of other young people. These young leaders will emerge to represent and inspire their peers to become active community stewards.

New Artists Performing Arts Productions, Inc. $900
            Represented by Anita Almich. This is a youth theater program dedicated to the discovery of new and unrecognized talent from within our communities. Participants in this program treasure their experience and view them as a springboard to new opportunities, and help to develop self-confidence and self esteem, qualities and characteristics that will carry them through life.

Miss Coos County Scholarship Program $1500
            Represented by Maureen Everett. This grant will be used to provide more scholarship money.  The true meaning of our program is the four points of the crown; Style, Service, Scholarship, and Success. With the cost of tuition going up across the country we feel that if we are able to award more scholarship money these young ladies will be more motivated to extend their schooling and work towards higher education. This funding will allow us to reach out to even more young women in our county.

Maslow Project of Coos County $2304.02
            Represented by Patty Sanden. This is a program of the Coos County Public Schools. Our project supports women by removing obstacles to services and education that homeless and at-risk women face. They are open 2-6 on school days and twice weekly during the summer. They serve 200 women clients including 60 ages 16 – 22. The funds will be used for supplies, transportation, and staffing.

CASA of Coos County/Oregon Coast Community Action $1500
            Represented by Twila Veysey. The funds will be used for training volunteers to advocate for 12-15 young women ages 16-19 and encourage the court to appoint CASA volunteers to this demographic.

RSVP $1000
            Represented by Christine Coles. The funds will be used to off set the cost reductions in the budget to allow them to continue with volunteer training programs for 85,000 hours of services at more than 100 sites in Coos County. 74% of their volunteers are women. One of the specific programs that needs trained volunteers is the Telephone Reassurance and Friendly Visitor Program.

Zonta International seeks to: improve the legal, political, economic, health, educational and professional status of women through service and advocacy; work for the advancement of understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of executives in business and the professions; promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; be united internationally to foster high ethical standards, implement service programs, and provide mutual support and fellowship for members who serve their communities, their nations, and the world.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Zontians are executives and professionals decision-making positions willing to contribute to improving the legal, political, educational, professional, economic and health status of women. Each club includes members from a variety of occupations and professions. To ensure professional diversity within each club, Zonta membership is by invitation.

WHEN AND WHERE WE MEET
